Forklift Truck Training Course
In order to be given certification as a forklift operator, you should undergo training on an industrial-powered lift truck, or forklift. The training must be specific to the forklift attachments and type which you will be using on the job site. Training should also reflect the environment wherein you would be working. Forklift safety must be a top priority for both the operator trainee and the trainer.
General Qualifications
Prior to assuming any operator duties, all forklift operators should undergo training and certification. Basic qualifications for utilizing a forklift include an age minimum of 18 years and the physical capacity to safely control and operate the unit.
Pedestrian Safety
The top concern of any forklift driver should be the safety of pedestrians. Pedestrians near the forklift are at risk of injury or death from getting hit by the machinery or its attachments. Pedestrians must always have the right of way, and forklift drivers must honk their horns when working near pedestrians or at intersections or crosswalks.
Weather Conditions
Many mishaps involving forklifts occur at loading docks. These areas become hazardous if rain leaks in through open dock doors causing an extremely slippery floor. Wet floor conditions create a hazard and drivers have to know possible dangers when working in loading dock areas.
Certification
Certification programs for forklift operators consist of both practical training and classroom instruction which can be tailored for the particular needs of each work environment. Training should be completed on the forklift type and attachments which will be utilized by the trainee in the workplace.
Mishaps
On average, there is approximately 100 deaths attributed to forklift accidents, while more than one hundred thousand are injured by forklifts. Nearly all of these accidents are preventable with proper operator training and attention to safety.

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklifts offer versatility and height. These models are outfitted with a pronged lift on an arm which extends over the top of the truck. The arm, or crane, is called a telescopic boom. The boom allows the person utilizing it to raise the load to great heights while maintaining a high degree of control. Standard forklifts can not move the load away from and towards the cab of the forklift, while a telescopic forklift allows that movement. The telescopic forklift is usually used in both construction and agriculture. It is better for applications where greater lift and control is required.
In situations needing high volume carton handling, hydraulic attachments referred to as forklift carton clamp attachments are better. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings which allow the operator to use uniform clamping force when lifting a cargo. It is available with a backrest which protects the cargo from damage.
A slip sheet attachment fits onto a slip sheet forklift. It is used for storing systems that don't utilize pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forks on the forklift. This type of system is useful for intra-corporate deliveries and for overseas shipments.
A lift platform that is meant to hoist personnel is called a Man Basket. It attaches to the forks on the forklift and a chain or strap is utilized to attach the basket to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the personnel from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are used for fastening the worker's safety harness.
